Ven. Geshe Dorji Damdul
Venerable Geshe Dorji Damdul is serving as the Director of Tibet House, the Cultural Centre of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, New Delhi, since 2011. After completing 15 years of study in Buddhist philosophy at the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics, Dharamshala and Drepung Loseling Monastic University, Mundgod, he received his Geshe Lharampa Degree (Ph.D. with distinction) in 2002, subsequently joining Gyudmed Monastic College, Hunsur, for a year. In 2003, the Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama sent Ven. Geshe Damdul to Cambridge University, United Kingdom, for proficiency studies in the English Language, during which time he was a Visiting Fellow at Girton College, Cambridge University. Upon his return, he served as the interpreter and translator for His Holiness the Dalai Lama, both within India and on travels abroad. During this time, Ven. Geshe Damdul served as one of the chief editors of scientific, philosophical, Buddhist and secular books, authored with prominent professors in the United Kingdom and the United States of America. For instance, he was assigned to work on His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s book, Emotional Awareness, co-authored with Prof. Paul Ekman. These books are used all over the world for the thorough study of Buddhist philosophy, metaphysics, epistemology and science. Ven. Geshe Damdul has himself published prolifically, translating several important Buddhist philosophy texts, and contributing papers in numerous national and international conferences. Inaugurated by His Holiness the Dalai Lama in the year 2016, with his blessings and under his auspices, numerous academic study courses were launched by Geshe la, under the umbrella of Nalanda Buddhist Philosophy Studies. This undertaking of Tibet House has since attracted over 10,545 students from more than 104 countries. The teachings given by Ven. Geshe Damdul comprise a total of 28 volumes of transcription books.
Ven. Geshe Dorji Damdul’s profound knowledge and love of rationality and science; his interactions with world renowned physicists and neuroscientists; his inclination not to miss any opportunity to teach the concept of emptiness ontology in profound depth to all aspiring students; his vast and very subtle teachings on bodhicitta and the practice of compassion in daily life; his ability to convey the teachings in a secular way—this and much else make him a unique and much loved teacher of dharma, who effortlessly weaves tradition with modernity to truly reach diverse contemporary audiences.
